New Statutes

Sometimes new legislation or policy decisions create the opportunity to start changing our professional practice. As an example of getting started, in Minnesota there is legislation that addresses new compensation plans for educators. The new alternative comp legislation is in two areas: evaluation and professional development. The statute citations are MS 122A.61 Subdivision 3(iii)(A) and Subdivision 4 and Subdivision 6. The Minnesota State Department of Education makes reference to working as a community of learners. Education Minnesota, the combined union (MFT) and the association (MEA) is looking at PLCs as one way to address the ongoing learning required for alternative compensation plans. In fact, Education Minnesota is offering PLC training for districts as they implement the alternative compensation package.

Some districts are using the phrase “collegial teams.” We believe whatever they are called, professional learning communities offer a systematic way to enhance skills, share repertoire, and develop shared leadership. PLCs have the ability to enhance teacher quality, which, in turn, will increase student achievement.
